One of the most controversial of our Community Guidelines that we have heard about during our stewardship efforts reads: “Dogs are prohibited on the beach area for the preservation of plant life and beach ecology. Please only bring your leashed dog to the upper park areas.” Needless to say, it has been unpopular with some people we have spoken with who don’t understand why their dog can’t splash around like the rest of us.

We get it – We love dogs, cats, and all the other animals that join us out at Denny Blaine. The diverse assortment of pets you might encounter is one of the many unique and unexpected parts of our culture here, so we understand that telling people not to bring their leashed dog to the beach area seems like a big ask. We want to take a moment to explain why we are asking people to refrain from bringing their dogs to the shoreline area of the park.

Lake Washington’s shoreline is not just a beautiful lake – It is a living ecosystem home to some of our region’s most treasured animals, including Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye salmon. Shallow shoreline habitat is especially important for juvenile Chinook salmon, which use these areas for shelter and protection before heading out to sea. As much fun as it is bringing your dog to the beach, their presence can harm the environment in a way that impacts these species, our water quality, and the likelihood of algae growth and beach closures due to bacterial hazards. Pet waste left near water can be easily carried straight into the lake, where it introduces harmful bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms into the water, disrupting the balance of the aquatic ecosystem that these species rely on to thrive and putting the health and safety of your fellow beachgoers and neighbors across the city at risk.

Dogs and other animals are still welcome in the upper areas of the park when they are leashed, but we are asking our community to please keep dogs off the actual shoreline and beach area, limiting them to the areas with grass where environmental impact is less likely. Even tiny, well-trained, and well-behaved dogs with the most attentive owners can unintentionally damage these shoreline areas, and at a heavily used beach like Denny Blaine, that impact can add up quickly.

So please, bring your dog to the park! We love to see animals at the park, and they are a part of our culture here, but for the sake of the local ecology, please follow Seattle Parks and Recreation rules prohibiting dogs on the beach. Following basic stewardship practices such as this one helps us protect the park, the lake, and our community that depends on this place for the unique experiences you can only find here.
